Run-DMC were signed to a independent label called Profile Records which was established in 1980 in New York City. The label was started by Cory Robbins and Steve Plotnicki who both borrowed $17,000 from their parents to start the label.

It was Run’s brother and manager Russell Simmons who gave Run-DMC's demo tape (with “It’s Like That”) to Profile who quickly signed them.
