Upon arriving in Marin City in the summer of 1988, Tupac and his sister Sekyiwa were supposed to with a woman named Assante from Afeni’s Black Panther days in New York City. What Afeni didn’t know was that Assante was an alcoholic who between passing out from alcohol would berate Tupac and Sekyiwa for being a burden to her. All this was happening while Afeni had stayed behind Baltimore to save up for a ticket to California.

Marin City consisted of mostly African-Americans who had relocated from the south during the war as part of the marine, many of them worked at the shipping yard. But now in 1988, it was rife with crime and poverty and the neighborhood was nicknamed ‘the jungle’.

Tupac, coming from Baltimore where he had gone to art school and studied ballet and Shakespeare and had white friends, this was a major adjustment. Life was not easy in Marin County for Tupac and his 13-year-old sister. With a former Black Panther revolutionary (Assante) turned drunk who would take out most of her anger and hate on Tupac who represented every black male who had let her down.

After awhile Assante would abandon Tupac and Sekyiwa entirely and they were relocated to some locals in the neighborhood. Once Afeni heard about this, she saved up enough money to come to Marin City and apply for a subsidized apartment. In the meantime, Tupac was considered the lowest of the low in the neighborhood.
