How Did Biggie Smalls Get His Nickname?
During his drug dealing days as a young buck when he was only about twelve years old, he was known as "Big" due to his large size and height. Later when he began rapping and released his first demo he began to go by the name Biggie Smalls. He took the name from a fictitious character in the 1975 movie Let's Do It Again, played by Calvin Lockhart. In the movie, Biggie Smalls is a local New Orleans bookmaker who finds out that he was hustled by two friends who fixed a boxing match to save their struggling fraternal lodge.
In 1993 he recorded a track with Mary J. Blige titled "Real Love" under the pseudonym The Notorious B.I.G. but he ended up sticking with this name for the remainder of career after finding out that his original moniker was already in use.
