Was Me Against The World Recorded Before 2Pac Was Shot In New York City?
The Tupac that created Me Against The World is the Tupac which many listeners hold closest to their hearts. The young Tupac who was growing into a mature version of himself while being at odds with society and wanting to express this reality. Unlike the Tupac most people know today, the Me Against The World Tupac was prior to the Bad Boy/East Coast beef, and all of his troubles were either personal (addiction, depression) or legal (sexual assault, battery etc). Despite what many people believe the album was recorded prior to him being robbed and shot in New York City (November 30, 1994).
Despite all the controversy and personal challenges facing Tupac at that time, the Me Against The World album was a huge success commercially. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart and stayed there for four weeks straight, selling 240,000 copies the first week and going not single, but double platinum by the end of the year. It not only beat Bruce Springsteen's Greatest Hits for the best selling album in the United States, but he also became the first artist to have a number one album while serving time in prison. A feat not repeated again until fifteen years later when Lil' Wayne dropped his I Am Not a Human Being album while in prison.
It was like a blues record. It was down-home. It was all my fears, all the things I just couldn't sleep about. Everybody thought I was living so well and doing so good that I wanted to explain it. And it took a whole album to get it all out. I get to tell my innermost, darkest secrets I tell my own personal problems.
