Did Lil' Cease Cripple Biggie? The Story Of Why Biggie Walked With A Cane

While Biggie Smalls was recording Life After Death in '95-'96 he was in a car accident which hospitalized him for three months. He had to complete rehabilitation and was confined to a wheelchair for a period. The car accident had shattered his left leg and made him dependent on a cane.

The story is that Biggie and Lil' Cease were arrested for smoking marihuana in public and in the process their car was repossessed. When they went to find a rental car, Biggie then chose a Chevrolet Lumina despite it having known brake problems. Lil' Cease protested but Biggie wouldn't hear it.

On the way out from the rental car parking lot, they almost hit the seller causing Biggie to think that Lil' Cease was high, but Cease told him it was the brakes. Biggie replied, '‘F*ck it keep going’'. They ended up going onto the highway and when they were coming down the Turnpike it started to rain and the car started to slide. After trying to control the car they swerved across to the other side of the road and that's what caused the injuries. Luckily it wasn't worse than a broken leg and a broken jaw.

During Biggie's stay in the hospital, he continued to write for the album and one lyric from "The Long Kiss Goodnight" references the accident, "Ya still tickle me, I used to be as strong as Ripple be / Til Lil' Cease crippled me."
