How Many Platinum Albums Does Nas Have?

Nas is one of hip-hop’s most respected MCs and he arguably has the most consistent discography to boot. He has been a compelling listen ever since his legendary debut in 1994, Illmatic, to his most recent album produced by Kanye West. There is no doubt that Nas is one of the best rappers to ever grab a mic, but how many platinum albums does Nas actually have?

1. Illmatic (1994)

Despite rave reviews, Nas’s debut Illmatic had low sales and didn’t go gold until January 17, 1996. And it didn’t go platinum until December 11, 2001, but it’s had incredible longevity and stands at 1,686,000 sales to date. Until this day, it’s hailed as a masterpiece, citing its production (DJ Premier, Pete Rock, Large Professor) and Nas’ intricate lyricism.

2. It Was Written (1996)

Unlike Illmatic, his second LP It Was Written was a barn burner straight out of the gate, selling over 2,000,000 during its first three months after release. The album went to number 1 on the Billboard album charts and stayed there for four consecutive weeks. It also spurred three hit singles, but despite all this initial success, sales stalled at around 2,595,000. It Was Written stands as Nas’ best-selling album.

3. I Am… (1999)

I Am... was highly anticipated and debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200, selling over 470,000 copies in its first week of sales. It received generally favorable reviews upon release but was also criticized (like it’s predecessor) for being too commercial. It stands as Nas’ second best selling album with 2,178,00 in sales.

4. Nastradamus (1999)

Despite being panned critically and generally considered Nas’ weakest effort, Nastradamus still debuted at #7 on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 232,000 copies in its first week. It was certified platinum on December 22, 1999, less than a month after it dropped.

5. Stillmatic (2001)
